His team cultivates Kappaphycus striatus, locally known as rumput laut sakol, a resilient seaweed species prized for its high-quality carrageenan used in food, cosmetics, and bioplastic industries.

With a cultivation cycle of only 50&ndash;60 days, sakol seaweed is both productive and environmentally adaptable. The project integrates traditional ecological knowledge such as "Mulung" &mdash; a customary practice of temporarily closing coastal waters to restore marine ecosystems, aligning well with Indonesia&rsquo;s vision for a regenerative blue economy.

Investing in a Sustainable Coastal Economy Pulau Lapang&rsquo;s potential extends beyond seaweed farming. As part of a broader eco-investment initiative, PT Usaha Baru Baranusa is seeking to expand its operations through an investment that would strengthen local production capacity, improve post-harvest quality, and enhance livelihoods for coastal families in Pantar Barat, Alor.

Over time, this has led to declining quality, reduced disease resistance, and lower tolerance to environmental stress. As climate variability intensifies, the need for a secure and resilient seedstock supply has become critical for the region&rsquo;s seaweed industry.
&nbsp;
To address this challenge, <a style="color: #1a28e9;" href="https://www.driftconsulting.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Drift Consulting</a>, an Australia-based consultancy specializing in seaweed cultivation, biology, and ecological R&amp;D, has proposed the development of a cooperative Eucheumatoid hatchery for Southeast Asia. The initiative aims to &ldquo;close the life cycle&rdquo; of Eucheuma and Kappaphycus through a coordinated R&amp;D program and hatchery network that can provide farmers with healthy, high-quality seedlings.

With over 20 years of combined experience across multiple seaweed species, including Asparagopsis, Kappaphycus, Eucheuma, and Ulva, Drift&rsquo;s team has been instrumental in developing both marine and land-based farming systems for commercial growers in Australia and beyond. Their expertise in hatchery development, broodstock management, and cultivation optimization positions them as a key partner in advancing sustainable seaweed farming practices.

The proposed program envisions a centralized research and training hub, supported by smaller regional hatcheries to cultivate and distribute new, stress-tolerant strains. Among rising tides and growing climate challenges, an innovative pilot project called Project SeaBox is proving that it&rsquo;s possible to farm smarter, not just harder. By reimagining the fundamentals of seaweed cultivation, Project SeaBox is offering new hope to coastal communities facing uncertain futures.

🌿The Challenge with Traditional Lines
For years, seaweed farming across Indonesia has relied on long-line systems&mdash;networks of rope stretched across the ocean surface. But with warming waters, erratic weather, and labor-intensive processes, this method is showing its limits. Farmers are seeing reduced yields, more crop failures, and dwindling income opportunities.
Worse still, the surface-only model isn&rsquo;t designed to handle the climate disruptions that now define the seascape. That&rsquo;s where Project SeaBox steps in&mdash;with a design that literally dives deeper.
&nbsp;
🪟 Introducing the SeaBox: A 3D Approach to Cultivation
Built with a bamboo frame and a netted structure, the SeaBox allows farmers to &ldquo;pour in&rdquo; their seaweed and let it grow&mdash;eliminating the tedious work with individual lines and having to manually adjust buoyancy of each line to adapt to daily heat or salinity changes. But this is more than a labor-saving tool. It&rsquo;s a 3D farming system that uses the water column, accessing cooler, nutrient-rich zones and reducing exposure to heat, low salinity, and predators.
&nbsp;
⚙️ From Prototype to Promising Pilot
The first SeaBoxes were deployed in Ujung Baji village in late 2024. Initial trials were cut short by an intense storm, prompting a redesign. But the setback didn&rsquo;t stop the team. By May 2025, the SeaBox was back in the water, and the results were striking:
🔹1.6 &ndash; 1.9&times; faster biomass gain compared to traditional long-lines
🔹Healthier seaweed with a rich brown color vs. pale yellow in control groups
🔹Less loss from break-offs, as fragments stayed within the box
Local farmer Dg. Ngopo, one of the project&rsquo;s earliest adopters, reported a significant reduction in maintenance time&mdash;just 15 minutes for the box compared to an hour for traditional lines.

🌍 A Bigger Vision: Livelihoods, Ecosystems, and Food Security
While the SeaBox was designed with seaweed farmers in mind, its vision aims to reach further:

The journey continues. Over the coming weeks, the SeaBox team will:

Lebih buruk lagi, model yang hanya menggunakan bagian permukaan laut ini tidak dirancang untuk menghadapi gangguan iklim yang kini menjadi kondisi umum. Di sinilah Project SeaBox hadir dengan desain berbeda.

🪟 Memperkenalkan SeaBox: Pendekatan 3D untuk Budidaya
Dibangun dengan rangka bambu dan jaring, SeaBox memungkinkan petani untuk “menuangkan” rumput laut mereka dan membiarkannya tumbuh bebas, mengurangi pekerjaan berat tanpa perlu mengikat rumput laut dan perawatan yang mudah. Namun ini bukan sekadar inovasi untuk mengurangi beban kerja. Ini adalah sistem budidaya 3D yang memanfaatkan kolom air, sehingga rumput laut bisa berada pada zona yang lebih sejuk dan kaya nutrisi serta mengurangi paparan terhadap panas, salinitas rendah, dan predator.

⚙️ Dari Prototipe ke Proyek Percontohan yang Menjanjikan
SeaBox pertama kali diterapkan di Desa Ujung Baji pada akhir 2024. Uji coba awal terhenti karena badai hebat, sehingga mendorong dilakukannya design ulang. Namun hambatan ini tidak menghentikan tim. Pada Mei 2025, SeaBox dipasang kembali ke laut, dan hasilnya signifikan:

Meskipun SeaBox dirancang dengan mempertimbangkan petani rumput laut, visinya menjangkau lebih jauh:
